Package of Practices
Pre-Planting Preparation
- Pit Marking: Ensures correct spacing & sunlight for palms. Supports intercropping.
- Planting Methods:
- Square Method: 25 ft × 25 ft spacing, ~70 seedlings per acre.
- Triangle Method: 25 ft spacing in triangular layout; 5–13 more seedlings per acre compared to square method.
- Pit Size: 3'×3'×3' (normal soil), 4'×4'×4' (rocky soil).
- Pit Filling Materials: Green manure, topsoil, farmyard manure, tank silt, red soil + sand mix, vermicompost, neem cake, bio-fertilizers (Azospirillum, Pseudomonas, Phosphobacteria, Trichoderma).
Post-Planting Management (Month-wise)
Farmers are guided through detailed care from the 1st to the 24th month:
- 1st Month: Proper watering (30–60L), soil compression, antifungal sprays, shade management.
- 4th Month: First fertilizer dose (NPK + FYM + Neem cake). Leaf splitting begins.
- 6th Month: Pest control (caterpillars, beetles). Growth measurements recorded.
- 12th Month: Third NPK application. Ideal growth: 12.5 ft height, 2.9 ft girth, ~15 leaves.
- 18th Month: Fifth NPK application. Some trees begin flowering.
- 24th Month: Trees mature; coconut yields stabilize. Apply full dose fertilizers regularly.
Nutrient & Soil Management
- Macronutrients: Regular application of NPK, FYM, neem cake in quarterly doses.
- Micronutrients:
- Magnesium Sulphate (250g per adult palm every 6 months)
- Borax (200g per palm annually in split doses)
- Zinc (200g per palm annually)
- Organic Farming: Mix of organic manures (FYM, vermicompost, green manure) with minimal inorganic nutrients recommended for sustainability.
For best results, follow complete agronomic practices as advised. Results may vary by soil condition, water availability, and climate.
