🦋 Pest Identification – Spodoptera litura

Identification

Adult moths measure between 15–20 mm (0.59–0.79 inches) in length and have a wingspan of 30–38 mm (1.18–1.5 inches). Forewings are gray to reddish-brown with a complex pattern of creamy streaks and paler lines along the veins. Hind wings are grayish-white with grayish-brown margins.

• Males have a blue-grey band extending from the upper corner (apex) to the inner margin of each forewing.
• Larvae have bright yellow stripes along the back and sides.
• Larval color varies from pale green to dark green, finally turning brown in mature stages.
• Mature brown larvae display three thin yellow longitudinal lines (one dorsal and two lateral).
• A row of black dots runs along each lateral side, and dark triangles mark each side of the dorsal line.

Life Cycle

Females lay 200–300 eggs in masses about 4–7 mm (0.16–0.27 inches) in diameter, cream to golden brown in color. Egg masses are usually covered with body hair scales and are laid on the underside of host leaves. Eggs hatch in 3–4 days.

• Young larvae are translucent green with a dark thorax, smooth skin, and patterns of red, yellow, and green lines.
• Feeding starts by skeletonizing leaves, later consuming entire leaves, flowers, and fruits.
• The caterpillar pupates in the soil several centimeters deep without a cocoon, producing a large amount of fluid during pupation.
• Pupal stage duration varies from a few weeks to several months, depending on the season.
• The complete life cycle is typically around 25 days.

• Freshly hatched caterpillars feed gregariously, scraping leaf surfaces from below.
